CNN OPERATOR FIRED AFTER SUGGESTING 'X' OVER CHENEY WAS 'FREE SPEECH'

A CNN switchboard operator was fired over the holiday -- after the operator claimed the 'X' placed over Vice President's Dick Cheney's face was "free speech!" "We did it just to make a point. Tell them to stop lying, Bush and Cheney," the CNN operator said to a caller. "Bring our soldiers home."

A caller initially phoned the network to complain about the all-news channel flashing an "X' over Cheney as he gave an address live from Washington. "Was it not freedom of speech? Yes or No?" the CNN operator explained. "If you don't like it, don't watch." Laurie Goldberg, Senior Vice President for Public Relations with CNN, said in a release: "

A Turner switchboard operator was fired today after we were alerted to a conversation the operator had with a caller in which the operator lost his temper and expressed his personal views -- behavior that was totally inappropriate. His comments did not reflect the views of CNN. We are reaching out to the caller and expressing our deep regret to her and apologizing that she did not get the courtesy entitled to her. "

Everyday life is about need. I need milk more than I need the $3. I need a paycheck more than I need a week off. This goon needed to make their point more than they needed their job.

Okay. Fine. I'll spout off about the war.

Bush I went in to Iraq. The Iraqi people begged us to stay and get rid of Saddam. That was not the mission. We accomplished our mission. We left.

Clinton went into Iraq. Tossed some boulders around, and pulled out. Some would say it was a success. I don't think there was a mission at all, I think it was an attempt to show Saddam that he needs to mind his own business. Didn't work, did it?

Saddam Hussein openly funded terrorist groups in the middle east like Hamas, treated senior members of al Qaeda in Baghdad hospitals, shot at US airplanes in the UN mandated no-fly-zone, ignored the 1991 ceasefire that ended the first Gulf War and ignored 17 resolutions from the United Nations . . . That’s not important???

He needed to be taken out. I wish we'd killed him. He is evil. Those who do not act against evil are preserving evil.

For those who say it was a mistake, I think we should section off about 100 acres of desert over in Iraq, let Saddam go, and put all who say it was a mistake in the area with him in charge. Guess what? If you don't kiss his ass every minute, he's going to start cutting off body parts until all that are left fear him enough to kiss his ass. See if it was a bad idea then.

Saddam has made it clear he hates America, and that he would love to see it annihilated. The world is a better place without him, and the ball-less bastards out there that want to pull out are the same ones that vote for the war, then against it because they are swayed by others opinion.

SENATORS FAIL TO GET BUILDINGS NAMED AFTER SELVES

Senators Arlen Specter (R-PA) and Tom Harkin (D-IA) named buildings after THEMSELVES in the Labor-HHS Appropriations conference -- which they oversaw!

The 2006 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee Conference Report (109-300) names two new buildings at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) after the Chairman, Senator Arlen Specter, and Ranking Democratic Member, Senator Tom Harkin.

The building with the new visitors center would be named after Senator Harkin.

The Headquarters and Emergency Operations Center Building (Building 21) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was to be renamed as the Arlen Specter Headquarters and Emergency Operations Center.But rule XXI of the House Rules for the 109th Congress states: "6. It shall not be in order to consider a bill, joint resolution, amendment, or conference report that provides for the designation or redesignation of a public work in honor of an individual then serving as a Member, Delegate, Resident Commissioner, or Senator." Staffers on The Hill mocked the move as the latest example of egos completely out of control. By late Thursday, the conference report went down in flames when the House voted down the request.Congress will now have the opportunity to remove the vanity plates from the report when it reconvenes and revotes.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- From the Oval Office, President Clinton told the nation Wednesday evening why he ordered new military strikes against Iraq. The president said Iraq's refusal to cooperate with U.N. weapons inspectors presented a threat to the entire world.

"Saddam (Hussein) must not be allowed to threaten his neighbors or the world with nuclear arms, poison gas or biological weapons," Clinton said.

"Earlier today I ordered America's armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces," Clinton said.

"Their mission is to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors," said Clinton.

Clinton also stated that, while other countries also had weapons of mass destruction, Hussein is in a different category because he has used such weapons against his own people and against his neighbors.

"Along with Prime Minister (Tony) Blair of Great Britain, I made it equally clear that if Saddam failed to cooperate fully we would be prepared to act without delay, diplomacy or warning," Clinton said. This coming from the guy who says Bush went in alone, no exit stratigy, ext. but he could do it "without delay", (what's your exit stratigy, Willie?) "diplomacy" (where's the UN, Slick?) "or warning" (Where's your planning, horn-dog?)

"In halting our airstrikes in November, I gave Saddam a chance -- not a license. If we turn our backs on his defiance, the credibility of U.S. power as a check against Saddam will be destroyed," the president explained.

"If Saddam can cripple the weapons inspections system and get away with it, he would conclude the international community, led by the United States, has simply lost its will," said Clinton. "He would surmise that he has free rein to rebuild his arsenal of destruction."

Excerpts As Prepared For Delivery Tonight by Vice President Cheney

THE VICE PRESIDENT: "As most of you know, I have spent a lot of years in public service, and first came to work in Washington, D.C. back in the late 1960s.

I know what it’s like to operate in a highly charged political environment, in which the players on all sides of an issue feel passionately and speak forcefully.

In such an environment people sometimes lose their cool, and yet in Washington you can ordinarily rely on some basic measure of truthfulness and good faith in the conduct of political debate. But in the last several weeks we have seen a wild departure from that tradition. And the suggestion that’s been made by some U. S. senators that the President of the United States or any member of this Administration purposely misled the American people on pre-war intelligence is one of the most dishonest and reprehensible charges ever aired in this city... Some of the most irresponsible comments have, of course, come from politicians who actually voted in favor of authorizing force against Saddam Hussein.

These are elected officials who had access to the intelligence, and were free to draw their own conclusions. They arrived at the same judgment about Iraq’s capabilities and intentions that was made by this Administration and by the previous Administration. There was broad-based, bipartisan agreement that Saddam Hussein was a threat … that he had violated U.N. Security Council Resolutions … and that, in a post-9/11 world, we couldn’t afford to take the word of a dictator who had a history of WMD programs, who had excluded weapons inspectors, who had defied the demands of the international community, who had been designated an official state sponsor of terror, and who had committed mass murder.

Those are facts. What we’re hearing now is some politicians contradicting their own statements and making a play for political advantage in the middle of a war. The saddest part is that our people in uniform have been subjected to these cynical and pernicious falsehoods day in and day out.

American soldiers and Marines are out there every day in dangerous conditions and desert temperatures – conducting raids, training Iraqi forces, countering attacks, seizing weapons, and capturing killers – and back home a few opportunists are suggesting they were sent into battle for a lie.

The President and I cannot prevent certain politicians from losing their memory, or their backbone – but we’re not going to sit by and let them rewrite history. We’re going to continue throwing their own words back at them. And far more important, we’re going to continue sending a consistent message to the men and women who are fighting the war on terror in Iraq, Afghanistan, and many other fronts.

We can never say enough how much we appreciate them, and how proud they make us. They and their families can be certain: That this cause is right … and the performance of our military has been brave and honorable … and this nation will stand behind our fighting forces with pride and without wavering until the day of victory.

Nobody is responsible for anything anymore, since almost everyone is a victim. Here are the top victim stories of 2005:

Children of witches are victimized by Halloween. Coming to class dressed as a witch on Halloween is a violation of "equitable schools' policies," according to the Toronto district school board. The board said it feared "traumatic shock" if children treat "the Christian sexist demonization of pagan religious beliefs as 'fun.'"

British Muslims are victimized by Piglet and piggy banks. Novelty pig calendars, toys and even a tissue box featuring Winnie the Pooh and Piglet have been banned in the benefits department at Dudley Council, West Midlands, out of deference to Muslim sensibilities.

Students are victimized by the disappearance of low weekend prices in bars. Pressured by the University of Wisconsin and a federal campaign against binge drinking, 24 bars near the Madison campus agreed to end cut-rate weekend prices. Three students and a Minneapolis law firm failed to convince a Wisconsin circuit judge that this represented conspiracy and price fixing. But they are suing again in federal court.

Fired CBS employee is victimized by Viacom, CBS, vicious bloggers and the panel that investigated her, including a "McCarthyite" who asked if she is a liberal. Mary Mapes complained last week that people were saying mean things about her and the discredited "60 Minutes II" segment she produced about President Bush's military service. No apology, though. For unknown reasons, Mapes' new book is titled "Truth and Duty" rather than "I Messed Up Big Time and I'm Sorry."

Atheists are victimized by religious people. The Los Angeles Times said nonbelievers feel stress when a major leaguer points skyward after a hit or when an actor thanks God after winning an Oscar. Some join atheist groups anonymously to avoid harassment. Still, atheist organizations hope at least one presidential candidate will court their votes in 2008. Thank God.

New Orleans school-bus failure was Bush's fault - maybe Bill Clinton's too. Why didn't the city use all those empty buses to drive poor people to safety as Hurricane Katrina approached? Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu explained on Fox News: "It's because this administration and administrations before them do not understand the difficulties .... . .[the Bush] administration did not believe in mass transit."

Bill Clinton: Showing off again

Bill Clinton, who lately has been waxed and buffed to "William Jefferson Clinton" was on Thursday at the opening day of a three-day symposium at Hofstra University devoted to the 42nd president's two terms.

When he was president, Clinton said, "I believed we needed a network of global cooperation," before adding: "As we see in Iraq, it's very difficult to solve complex problems when we are essentially alone."

Among our allies in Iraq are the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, Korea, Japan, Poland, Britain, and Hungary, along with over two dozen smaller partners for freedom. When the chips were down, and we called for help, these nations proved to be America’s real allies.

Once again, Clinton is going against what my Pop always told me: "It is better to sit quietly and let someone think you are stupid, than to open your mouth and prove them right."

This was supposed to be a day for history, not politics.

-- A Florida Senator has introduced legislation that would change the language spoken in classrooms of nearly 600,000 students. Under Florida Senate Bill S. 522, introduced by Sen. Les Miller, all Florida students in kindergarten through second grade would receive mandatory Spanish instruction beginning in 2007. Despite a serious lack of teachers and an even more serious lack of funding, Florida schools would be required to carry out the bilingual mandate, even for immigrant students from non-Spanish speaking nations.

"The goal of educators in the United States should be to ensure that students are proficient the language that will be the most important for their success - English," said Mauro E. Mujica, chairman of U.S. English, Inc. "Through foreign language instruction is laudable, requiring the teaching a specific foreign language is an affront to the many different languages represented by these children."

According to the Florida Department of Education, nearly one- sixth of the state's K-2 students were classified as limited English proficient in 2003-04. The department's website further indicates that Florida's LEP students speak a combined total of 220 languages, with Haitian Creole/French Creole, Portuguese, French, Vietnamese and Arabic following Spanish as the most common foreign tongues.

"It is unfortunate that some of our legislators need to be reminded that we are an English speaking nation," continued Mujica. "If we are concerned with giving our children the ability to interact with the world, we should give them the opportunity to learn the languages of the world. The recent move toward requiring Spanish seems to be less about global relations and more about a nod to the misguided notion that we are an officially bilingual nation."

With a cost estimated in the tens of millions of dollars, the proposal has already drawn ire for its hefty price tag. "Elected officials need to make sure that they are getting the most from severely strained education budgets," Mujica added. "Trying to address the nation's growing number of non-English speakers by teaching K-2 students Spanish is like trying to put out a grease fire with water. It is an ill-advised, knee-jerk response that only leads to further trouble down the line."

Greenpeace fined for reef damage

Greenpeace has been fined almost $7,000 (£4,000) for damaging a coral reef at a World Heritage site in the Philippines.

Their flagship Rainbow Warrior II ran aground at Tubbataha Reef Marine Park, in the Sulu Sea, 650km (400 miles) south-east of Manila.

Park officials said almost 100 sq m (1,076 sq ft) of reef had been damaged.

Greenpeace agreed to pay the fine, but blamed the accident on outdated maps provided by the Philippines government.

"The chart indicated we were a mile and a half" from the coral reef when the ship ran aground, regional Greenpeace official Red Constantino told AFP news agency.

"This accident could have been avoided if the chart was accurate," he said, adding, however, that Greenpeace felt "responsible" for the damage.

'Immediate action'
The accident happened while the Rainbow Warrior was on a four-month tour of the Asia-Pacific region to promote environmentally-friendly energy sources.

Greenpeace divers were at the Tubbataha park, off the coast of Palawan island, to inspect the effect of global warming on the coral reef.

The Rainbow Warrior escaped serious damageMr Constantino said the reef appeared to be healthy, with no evidence of bleaching which is believed to be caused by warmer sea temperatures.

The Rainbow Warrior II escaped serious damage and was towed into deeper water by its own rubber boats.

Tubbataha park manager, Angelique Songco, praised the work Greenpeace was doing to protect the environment.

"We also appreciate the immediate action they took to get the full assessment of the damage," she said.

Michael Moore's success as a filmmaker and "working-class hero" is part of a carefully crafted image that bears little connection with reality, finds author Peter Schweizer in his new book "Do As I Say (Not As I Do): Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy."

Don't be fooled by the scraggly beard, the baggy jeans, the plaid shirts and the baseball caps, explains Schweizer.

Don't be fooled by his claim to be from the working-class town of Flint, Mich., he writes.
Don't be fooled by his various claims to have made no more than $19,000 a year, $15,000 a year or $12,000 a year before his first hit, "Roger & Me," the author says.

In fact, Moore didn't even grow up in Flint, but rather nearby Davison. His father was not the working stiff struggling to make ends meet that he portrays, but a General Motors employee who worked from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. and played golf every afternoon at a private country club and who had four weeks of paid vacation and retired comfortably at the age of 53.

Before "Roger & Me" hit it big in 1989, Moore had already received an advance from a New York publisher for $50,000, another $50,000 from Mother Jones magazine upon termination as an editor and a $20,000 grant from Ralph Nader. After "Roger & Me," he became fabulously wealthy by nearly any standard.

When Moore flew to London to be interviewed by the BBC or to promote a film, he flew the Concorde and stayed at the Ritz. But, according to the book, he would also keep a room at a cheap hotel down the street where he would meet with journalists to maintain his image as a "man of humble circumstances."

His 10-acre, waterfront home today is on Michigan's Torch Lake, one of the three most beautiful lakes in the world, according to National Geographic. He was accused by authorities of despoiling a wetland – just like many of the greedy, robber-baron land-grabbers he criticizes – when he tried to expand his private beach.

Moore also owns a penthouse in New York City. That was his official residence until 2003 when he switched to Michigan. That coincided with the success of "Bowling for Columbine," which brought him millions in profits – profits that would have been taxed at a rate of 7.7 percent in New York, as opposed to 3.9 percent in Michigan, saving him hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Schweizer reports that Moore, like Rosie O'Donnell, detests guns in the hands of ordinary Americans but surrounds himself with armed guards when he is out in public.

One of the secrets to Moore's success, writes Schweizer, is his virulent anti-Americanism, which has wide appeal abroad. Moore, for instance, has sold twice as many books in Germany alone as he has sold in the U.S.

"Moore's books and films sell well overseas because anti-Americanism is a popular idiom," writes Schweizer. "Says Andrian Kreye of Munich, Germany's Sueddeutsche Zeitung, 'German readers feel safe regurgitating anti-Americanism so long as it's an American who says it first.'"
Schweizer reveals in "Do As I Say (Not As I Do)" that Moore owns tens of thousands of shares of stock despite claiming he owns none. Most surprisingly of all, however, is the revelation that among those stocks are substantial shares of the much maligned Halliburton.

Moore is just one of the targets of "Do As I Say (Not As I Do)." Others include:
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who proclaims her support for unions, yet the luxury resort, the vineyard and the restaurants she partly owns are strictly non-union. While she advocates tough new laws enforcing environmental regulations on the private sector, the exclusive country club she partly owns failed to comply with existing environmental regulations for the past eight years – including a failure to protect endangered species.

Noam Chomsky has made a reputation for calling America a police state and branding the Pentagon "the most hideous institution on earth," yet his entire academic career, writes Schweizer, has been subsidized by the U.S. military.

Barbra Streisand is another proponent of environmentalism, yet she drives an SUV, lives in a mansion and has a $22,000 annual water bill. In the past, she has driven to appointments in Beverly Hills in a motor home because of her aversion to using public bathrooms.

Ralph Nader plays the role of the citizen avenger – the populist uninterested in wealth and materialism, pretending to live in a modest apartment. In fact, he lives in fancy homes registered in the names of his siblings.

Black Democratic leaders in Maryland say that racially tinged attacks against Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele in his bid for the U.S. Senate are fair because he is a conservative Republican.
Such attacks against the first black man to win a statewide election in Maryland include pelting him with Oreo cookies during a campaign appearance, calling him an "Uncle Tom" and depicting him as a black-faced minstrel on a liberal Web log.
Operatives for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) also obtained a copy of his credit report -- the only Republican candidate so targeted.
But black Democrats say there is nothing wrong with "pointing out the obvious."
"There is a difference between pointing out the obvious and calling someone names," said a campaign spokesman for Kweisi Mfume, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate and former president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
State Sen. Lisa A. Gladden, a black Baltimore Democrat, said she does not expect her party to pull any punches, including racial jabs at Mr. Steele, in the race to replace retiring Democratic U.S. Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes.
"Party trumps race, especially on the national level," she said. "If you are bold enough to run, you have to take whatever the voters are going to give you. It's democracy, perhaps at its worse, but it is democracy."
Delegate Salima Siler Marriott, a black Baltimore Democrat, said Mr. Steele invites comparisons to a slave who loves his cruel master or a cookie that is black on the outside and white inside because his conservative political philosophy is, in her view, anti-black.
"Because he is a conservative, he is different than most public blacks, and he is different than most people in our community," she said. "His politics are not in the best interest of the masses of black people."
During the 2002 campaign, Democratic supporters pelted Mr. Steele with Oreo cookies during a gubernatorial debate at Morgan State University in Baltimore.

Democrat Refuses to produce data sought by Delay

The chairman of the Texas Democratic Party today rejected a subpoena asking him to provide five years of fund-raising materials in connection with the criminal case against former Republican House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

Charles Soechting, the state chairman, said he would attend, as ordered, a court hearing Tuesday to decide whether a Democratic judge should remain on DeLay's case. But, he will not bring the documents requested by DeLay's attorney Bill White unless ordered by the court.
White issued the subpoena on Thursday, asking Soechting for mail-outs, brochures, e-mails and other requests seeking Democratic support and donations "particularly, but not limited to, materials that mention Tom DeLay, or Texas redistricting, or the Texas Legislative races of 2002."

DeLay, who is charged with criminal conspiracy and money laundering, has asked that state district Judge Bob Perkins be removed from the case because of multiple contributions he made to Democratic candidates and causes since 2000. His attorneys argue that Perkins is too much of a Democrat to give the powerful Republican a fair trial.

Soechting, who may testify at Tuesday's hearing before senior judge C.W. Duncan, said he objected to White's request because it was "overly broad, unduly burdensome, and not likely to lead to relevant and admissible evidence."

Prosecutors allege that DeLay and his associates funneled restricted corporate money through a Texas political action committee founded by DeLay to an arm of the Republican National Committee, which sent it back to seven GOP candidates running for the Texas Legislature in 2002. Texas law prohibits corporate money from being used directly in political campaigns.
